As GIS technology and research keep advancing rapidly, we want to slow down a few times a year to give you a closer look behind the scenes. This is why we are launching our Point of Interest newsletter, with a rotating spotlight section on one of the major focus topics at HeiGIT. Our first spotlight takes a look at the latest evolution of openrouteservice, its newest developments for humanitarian use, and where we are heading next.

You may have noticed some changes around openrouteservice recently, and there is more to come. Our journey already spans over a decade of developing open-source code and providing GIS- and mobility-related APIs to over 300 thousand users. Knowing that our efforts have supported thousands of projects makes us incredibly proud. That is why we recently took a step back to focus on bringing fresh innovation to our users and the broader ecosystem.

We have been working closely with our partners to integrate critical and dynamic mission data into routing, turning our openrouteservice ecosystem into a smart tool for humanitarian logistics. Closer to home, we launched a shaded openrouteservice to find the quickest and most shaded route. It is already available in over 80 major German cities and is steadily growing. We hope this serves as a scientifically grounded basis for public actors and civil society to have informed discussions about heat readiness in our cities. Additionally, as public transit data has become more accessible and scalable on the technical side, we believe it is the perfect moment to extend our free API ecosystem with public transport routing.

Of course, these advancements require space and resources to grow. That´s why we will soon begin deprecating some of our older clients, services, or features. While it will not be a strict one-to-one replacement, we will replace essential functionalities with new alternatives that will provide a much better overall experience. We will announce these changes across all our channels well in advance so you have plenty of time to adapt your projects.

A New Service for Public Transport Routing

HAMM-Dar: Heat-Aware Mobility Models to Support Climate-Resilient Transport Planning in Dar es Salaam

In the HAMM-Dar project, researchers from the Universities of Dar es Salaam and Heidelberg work together to address the growing heat exposure faced by pedestrians in Dar es Salaam by creating a Heat-Mobility Digital Twin.

The project combines satellite data with on-the-ground climate measurements to map how heat affects pedestrians across the city. The tool enables scenario planning, allowing city officials to simulate the cooling impact of specific interventions (such as adding trees or shade structures) before they are implemented.

One Year with the Climate Action Navigator: How Open Data is Powering Climate Action in Cities

A year after its launch, the Climate Action Navigator is a growing open-data dashboard that helps target climate action through high-resolution assessment tools focused on sustainable mobility, carbon emissions, and land use. The latest version include assessment tools for traffic emissions and rooftop solar panels

Filling In The World Map With Street-Level Imagery and Deep Learning: MapSwipe and Hug-a-Panorama

Deep learning models and street-level imagery can help us gain information about regions that are still scarcely mapped.
We present an app to help volunteers map needed information using street-level images and a Panoramax instance that automatically analyzes crowdsourced street-view imagery.

Building a Global GIS Learning Community for the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement

The IFRC Network GIS Training Platform is a global hub for building up GIS capacities in the National Societies worldwide, with structured training materials and in-person trainings all over the world, from Islamabad to Bogotá.
We keep working to expand this training offer, e. g. with learning materials in several languages.

New User Statistics for OpenStreetMap Contributions in ohsomeNow

The ohsomeNow dashboard provides an overview of OpenStreetMap mapping activities in near real time. The latest release of ohsomeNow allows users to retrieve statistics for individual OSM usernames, opening up new possibilities for exploring personal contribution histories and understanding organized editing activities.

Optimizing solid waste collection in underserved regions using openrouteservice

Efficient waste collection remains a major challenge in many rapidly growing cities.
In a pilot study in Kenya, openrouteservice is used to improve solid waste collection planning and identify underserved areas. 

Strengthening national risk management using the Sketch Map Tool

The Sketch Map Tool was used within Colombia’s National Disaster Management System to steer community mapping in Cali, as part of a nationwide project to strengthen local capacities and processes for socialization, analysis, and risk reduction. 
Our latest publications span from analyzing the impact of floods on agriculture and caloric loss in Madagascar to simulating car parking choices with Large Language Models and developing a framework for automated road pavement crack detection.
We have been studying hidden energy poverty in Temuco, Chile, by integrating building energy simulation, thermal comfort monitoring, and actual energy consumption; And we have evaluated the effectiveness of biological larviciding treatments in controlling invasive mosquito populations in Heidelberg, Germany.
